From the Reviews:
- "Perfekt ist die Mimikry, das Resultat aber etwas mager. (...) Der jugendlichen Lust auf Unterhaltung sei das Original empfohlen, nicht die Kopie." - Neue Zürcher Zeitung
Please note that these ratings solely represent the complete review's biased interpretation and subjective opinion of the actual reviews and do not claim to accurately reflect or represent the views of the reviewers.
Similarly the illustrative quotes chosen here are merely those the complete review subjectively believes represent the tenor and judgment of the review as a whole. Notes about the Reviews and the Book's Reception:
Izlaženje is a 're-mix' of Thomas Bernhard's novella, Walking (Gehen), as Marković takes Bernhard's perambulatory novella and turns it into one about the Belgrade clubing scene.
The changes she makes leave the rhythm and much of the substance of Bernhard's text unchanged, except that the destinations and the philosophically-tinged talk now are very different.
The German version has garnered decent attention and obviously benefits from being even closer to Bernhard's original.
The title works very well, too: Ausgehen means 'to go out' (as to a club, etc.) but it can also be read as 'out of Gehen', which is what the text itself is.
Critics seem to be divided as to whether it's just a clever gimmick or actually offers something new; it does, however, seem to work quite well.
(Bernhard's Walking is included in the volume of Three Novellas (see the University of Chicago Press publicity page, or get your copy at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk) -- but don't count on Izlaženje appearing in English anytime soon.)
